چکیده

Comparison of relativistically and nonrelativistically calculated intensity versus energy profiles in low energy electron diffraction (LEED) from the (111) surface of Au (2 = 79) reveals that relativistic corrections are quite significant. They can however, be obtained in very good approximation by quasirelativistic calculations, in which spin-averaged relativistic phase shifts are used as input for the nonrelativistic multiple scattering formalism. Further, relativistic effects on intensities are found to be comparable to differences arising from different approximations to the exchange part of the ion core potential.

DIFFUSE LEED INTENSITIES OF DISORDERED CRYSTAL SURFACES III. LEED investigation of the disordered (110) surface of gold

The LEED pattern of clean (101) surfaces of Au show a characteristic (1 X 2) superstructure. The diffuseness of reflections in the reciprocal [OlO] direction is caused by onedimensional disorder of chains, strictly ordered into spatial [lo]] direction. There is a transition from this disordered superstructure to the normal (1 X 1) structure at 420 r 15°C. The angular profiles of the (04) and (0...

Structural investigations on Xe / Pd ( 111 ) with spin - polarized LEED

(6 x ~}R30°-Xe/Pd(lil) and the dilute phase of Xe/Pd(li I) were investigated with spin-polarized low-energy electron diffraction (SPLEED). In the experiment spin-polarized electrons from a GaAs source were scattered and the spin-dependent intensities were measured. Comparative calculations were carried out by means of a relativistic LEED program. The structure determination of (6 x fi)R30”-Xe/P...

Direct graphene growth on MgO: origin of the band gap.

A 2.5 monolayer (ML) thick graphene film grown by chemical vapor deposition of thermally dissociated C(2)H(4) on MgO(111), displays a significant band gap. The apparent six-fold low energy electron diffraction (LEED) pattern actually consists of two three-fold patterns with different 'A' and 'B' site diffraction intensities. Similar effects are observed for the LEED patterns of a 1 ML carbon fi...

Structure Determination of Au on Pt(111) Surface: LEED, STM and DFT Study

Low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been used to investigate the atomic and electronic structure of gold deposited (between 0.8 and 1.0 monolayer) on the Pt(111) face in ultrahigh vacuum at room temperature. The analysis of LEED and STM measurements indicates two-dimensional growth of the first Au mono...

Effective calculation of LEED intensities using symmetry - adapted functions

The calculation of LEED intensities in a spherical-wave representation can be substantially simplified by symmetry relations. The wave field around each atom is expanded in symmetry-adapted functions where the local point symmetry of the atomic site applies. For overlayer systems with more than one atom per unit cell symmetry-adapted functions can be used when the division of the crystal into m...
